Peter's type A

mpollard Apr 12, 2008 06:28 PM

I had a litter of Jim Peter Type A pastels a couple of weeks ago. Here's a pic of one of the babies freshly fed and shed. Is it just me, or do these things look kinda BCCish? I included a couple pics of mom too. As I understand it, the founder stock was improrted back in the 70's from an area where the Andes may be lower and BCC and BCI may have naturally intergraded (or just Colombian BCC?). I have some type Bs also and I think they look BCI, but the type As really look like they may be carrying some BCC influence. The angular head, the "eyelashes", the deep maroon tail saddles, the pattern, the color, etc... Anybody else see this, or is it just me?

Thanks for looking!

Mark

Oh, and the size too. They are big babies. I am feeding them juvenile mice, but there's no doubt that they could take adults.

A lot of the "old school" Colombians, which the Peters bloodline animals are, look more like what the masses call BCC. The Colombian Boas imported a number of years ago, must have been collected from a different area of Colombia than the "farm raised" animals imported today. They have an overall different appearance leaning more toward what most people think of when they think of BCC. Course if you sit down with the original descriptions of BCC and BCI, you will either have to classify them as BCC or assume the BCI description is wrong.

In 1974 I had two teachers who ran an open room project(kinda Hippy 70's stuff)Anyway one teacher kept all kinds of animals terrariums with amphibians,Reptiles etc..Part of the "learning experience"LOL it was great I thought. This teacher brought in a couple of baby Colombian Boas and kept them at school. They were beautiful goldish colored Boas with the longer looking heads.I wish I had gotten a few of those beauties back then. Thanks for the feedback, Jeff. I've heard of the Colombian "true redtail", and although I don't have any documentation to establish the locality specifics (maybe Jim Does), this is what I'd expect one to look like. Colombian BCC, BCI or something in between, think they're pretty cool!

As Jeff pointed out, I agree that neonate looks very much like the Colombians that I remember coming in during the late 70’s. They had a very distinctive appearance.

Thanks for your reply, Kelly. I was reading about the existence of Colombian BCC on the Rio Bravo site, and also in Vin Russo's book, "The Complete Boa Constrictor". I guess back in the day some exports (or at least some specimens) must have originated from more easternly regions of Colombia. Maybe I should sit down and count some scales or something...
