Heck-I'm breeding an 07 pewter male NOW (he's 750 gms). He's doing a good job on two females . too. Some have had successful breedings as small as 300 gms. I don't even try them until they pass 600, since breeding may put them off feed and I believe at that age it's important that they put on steady groweh-I don't want to compromise them for later breeding.

My rule of thumb is 700g. I have found that young breeders seem to be a little pickey about their girls. Older breeders will breed almost anything.

There is a lot of debate on breeding size and Weight . I’ve heard of all different ages and sizes breeding ,how many are successful breading I don’t know but I never breed a male under 1 year of age no matter how big he is , and they have to be over 550 gr. But that’s just me, better safe than sorry. Depending on there feeding pattern ,whether they are a consistent feeder or not ,I may not breed them until they are 2yr.s old but to each there own . Ps . I won’t even get started on the females breeding size and weight . David

In general an 07 male should be breeding size with no problem for the 08/09 breeding season. Some males will start producing plugs as young as 4-5 months and as little as 300g while others may not produce plugs for 2 years and over 1000g. Also the thing you must remember is that just because a male is producing plugs, is old enough (which if producing plugs they are old enough), and big enough (if producing plugs it's big enough) they still may not breed for you. We have a 1.5yr old black pastel male that is over 750g that has been producing plugs since he was 300g and he will not breed anything. I've tried every trick in the book and he is just not gonna go this year more than likely. I have personally had a male as small as 320g father a clutch off of one lock-up (didn't think he would breed and when he did, I was shocked and never put hime back with the female).
