Russian not breeding

lindagirl May 23, 2003 06:23 AM

I hope someone can help me.
I have a couple of russian rat snakes 2,5 and 3 years old.
They are togeather all year long and they did have a mild cool down periode.
Now I see my two snake crawling over another, and when they do that they both shade/judder(?)

But always in the 69 position ehhh *giggle*
I also did noticed they are inseparable(?) if the male goes to the left side of the tank, the female will follow, if the female is going to her humid hide, the male follows and lay besides her.
Ewwwww my intention was to make them copulate after teh mild cool down, but don't sucseed so far.
Anyone out there with teh golden tip for me?

Thanks to you all people,

Linda

I think they are usually a little older when breeding the first time. They also need a very cold time out. I keep mine at about 45-50*F. for, at least, three months

But how curiouse am I asking about the shake/jutter movement I do see?
What does that behaviour mean?
Hope you can help me on this one.

Howdy,
I also have a pair of Russian Ratsnakes that live together, and they also do that jerking and shaking thing as well, and mine are just barely a year old. I get the feeling this is a mating ritual kind of behavior even though mine are too young to mate. Mine will also do this with me when I am holding them. Mine also are not eating as frequently or as much right now. I have read posts on this forum that the reduced eating is also normal during breeding times, and I suppose this applies even if they are not going to actually breed. Good luck with your two Russians. They are great snakes, aren't they?

...probably has to do with the snakes not recognizing each other. This is not a mating behavior. I've noticed that Russian ratsnakes tend to be a little nervous around other snakes, at first. They are very outgoing, and even shudder when I pick them up from their cages. They will get used to each other quickly, however, and won't do that much after that.

I've noticed this behavior in snakes ranging from Greenish ratsnakes, to Blue beauties. It appears to me to be more of a "hey get off my back" behavior whem they seem to get aggitated with other snakes presence.

They are exactly 2 yeas old now. 3 months long hybernation at 12-16C (separately), night drops of temps during one month more, lots of food. They lived together since they were 6 months old. 8 good eggs. I bought this Russians in Russia .

I just picked up a pair and got lucky. They had been pre-cooled and when I put them together they started doing their thing. This is their first year breeding, so I don't expect too much, but anything would make me happy. Good looking snake too, by the way.
