After much research and great success with other reptiles i recently purchased a veiled chameleon. is it normal for veiled to bask with their mouths open??

My veiled does that sometimes. I usually mist her cage if I catch her doing it, just in case. =}

Yes, this is pretty normal. As the cham starts to get a bit too warm they will gape to cool themselves. Then they usually move out of the heat once they've thoroughly warmed up. As long as the cham isn't sitting gaping when NOT basking, crouching dark colored hunched under the heat spot all day, or showing a lot of sticky saliva in its mouth, its fine.
