An amazing sight (olive pythons)

Chance Apr 13, 2008 08:24 PM

I've had my female olive python on breeder loan to Jeff Hartwig since last August. He e-mailed me a couple months ago to say she had been copulating, then he e-mailed again last week to say she had been exhibiting some signs of being gravid. Imagine my surprise when he e-mailed a little while ago, the title of the e-mail being "You're gonna love this" (and right he was!), to tell me she had surprised everyone by laying a clutch of eggs today! The final tally is unknown, though I'm thinking there are between 15 and 16 based on how the clutch looks. There was only one slug. A point of potential concern is the blood on the outside of the eggs, though Jeff thinks that may be due to their rather large sizes. Those are going to be some big babies!

I just wanted to give a huge congratulations to Jeff and the hard work he puts into all his snakes. Everyone knows breeding olive pythons isn't exactly like breeding corns or bps, but Jeff has something figured out! This is at least his third successful year of producing them. After seeing his setups, I can completely understand why.

Yadda yadda, so on to the pictures. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Jeff truly is a phenomenal keeper - and he has one heck of a car sitting in his garage! lol

Keep your fingers crossed for me man. I'm hoping that if she tore anything while expelling the eggs, that it's nothing major.

She's around 9-10', but slender bodied. I wouldn't have expected her to drop that many eggs, or at least that many big eggs. Hopefully they'll be big, robust babies.

I'm going to acquire another 2 males and a female, although I might move one of the males.

Man, what is Jeff's secret with the Olives????!!!!! Mine have been breeding for 3 years with no ovulation from my female at all!! AHHHHHHHHHH, so frustrating!! Well, good luck with the eggs, keep us posted!!

>>Man, what is Jeff's secret with the Olives????!!!!!

I think a lot of people would like to know the answer to that question! I've seen his setups and I think maybe one of the issues is that people don't give them enough space. He has them in enclosures that allow them to climb around and really take advantage of a lot of room.

His adults are big, but not fat. I know Dave Barker once told me through e-mail that fat olives are the main reason the species isn't produced more often. My female wasn't very thick at all, for comparison.

I know what you mean though about copulation with no results. The olives I had back in '04 bred like crazy, and I'm even pretty sure I witnessed (and photographed!) ovulation. Nada came from it though. Tricky animals...

Dave also told me that males should be thin, and the same with females. Fat olives don't ovulate. I DO think they start to bulk out around 10 foot.

Oh, my female that died last year was 23lbs. My 11' male is starting to get heavy, too. And they don't get much to eat.
