Toxic Plant?

jeffharding Apr 14, 2008 03:13 PM

Does anyone know if Philodendron is toxic in a snake or monitor cage? If so, can anyone recommend a non-toxic vine-like plant to put in a snake or monitor cage?

Thank you for your help

I have seen Philodendron in numerous snake and lizard cages, and if I remember correctly that includes a Black Tree Monitor cage.

It is toxic but not excessively so. Corucia zebrata will eat the stuff like crazy and some even speculate it is an important part of their diet.

I have also seen snakes and geckos drinking water droplets off of the leaves of Philodendron so I'm speculating it really is not that bad, or at least needs to be injested in large quantities to be toxic.

You might want to get the book The Art of Keeping Snakes. Numerous plant species are discussed.

Currently keeping a small collection of various Gonyosoma. Both G. janseni and G. oxycephala.

I have a philodendron in my snake's terrarium. I also have pothos in there, which is a VERY excellent non-toxic vining plant.
