Hesitant to post this...

Rolf Apr 14, 2008 04:53 PM

...because I don't really consider this a "successful" clutch. There were only two eggs and one slug. But I figure it's a step in the right direction. They arrived on Easter Sunday and are the biggest snake eggs I've ever seen. They still look OK in the incubator so my fingers are definitely crossed.

Thanks for looking, I'd love to hear other people's experiences with these guys.

Rolf, with a species like that, I consider any egg production to be a success. How often have Apodora been bred in captivity? Surely rarely. Wow, well huge congrats regardless of the eventual outcome.

I know someone who had a clutch of 7 last year, but his female just dropped 23 a week ago.

Ah, well glad to hear people actually are breeding them. Were the babies sold off? I don't remember seeing them hit the classifieds or anything, though I certainly could've missed them.

The ones I'm refering to were laid last week. I may have some of them to sell when they hatch.

Wow man!!! That's a start man, congrats!!! Only 2 eggs and no sugs?? Mom's doing well too?? If you don't mind, how old and how big is your female?? And the same for your male??
Thanks,
Jasin

Hi Jasin -

Actually one slug. I know, I was surprised I kept expecting her to drop more eggs, but they never came. I couldn't feel anything hung up in her, and she started eating again less than a week after laying. She seems fine, so I'm not worried about her.

She's big - over twelve feet and probably almost fifty pounds, but I haven't weighed her. My guess would be she's ~7 years old. The male is a lot smaller, probably eight feet and maybe less than ten pounds. My guess (I bought him at ~6 feet) is he's three, or at the oldest, four years old, but it's tough to say because he goes through pretty long periods of not wanting to eat a lot like a male chondro or ball - has anyone else seen this?

I'm glad to hear other folks are having luck with these guys. My adults are a bit of a pain because they're pretty nervous, but cbb babies that get used to people from day one would be awesome. Thanks for the comments!

Congats on getting to eggs! No need to be hesitant to post papuans! I have a friend who was just stoked to see copulation!
alas I don't own any yet but for large snakes they would be the only ones that would really get me interested.

Congrats, man. How low did you cool them, if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks -

Actually, didn't cool them at all. For these and the couple of other indo species that I work with, I've had my best luck by not doing much of anything. With the Papuans, my male stopped eating so I tossed him in with the female. I'd pull him out to feed the female (or offer her food anyways) and put him back in with her the next day. Kept doing that until one day she kicked him out of the hide box and that's when I found the eggs. I would keep them together constantly, but mine are pretty nervous and won't feed in bins like my white-lippeds and Moluccans do.

Congrats on your Apodora. I am very interested in your outcome and anyone who has had other like succeses with this species. I have a 1.2 ( and looking for more so contact me via off the list if you have some), to include a 12 year old female ~ 12', a 7' male, and a 4' F. I can not introduce the male without the female trying to eat him. I am praying that my second smaller female may be able to work out. The larger female is a VPI CB python but the others are W.C. I am interested in cooling, incubation periods, ovulation-oviposition, etc. My e-mail is krizzoo@hotmail.com if you have any for sale, I am looking for a group of 3.5. Thanks

I have 1.1

My male is huge -- huge enough that I sometimes doubt he is a male. He was WC at about 5.5' and is now just shy of 12' and 30 lbs. My female was farmed and imported as a neonate. I've had her for 5 years now, and I figure she is around 6 years old. She is about 11' and 20 lbs.

This year, when I introduced them, they actually sparred quite a bit which was worrisome -- really tore up a 7' X 3' AP cage. They both went off feed for about 7 weeks, which was why I got around to introducing them at all.

I'm really hopeful for next year though. I love working with these guys. My female came in really nervous, but after 3 weeks she calmed down and has not snapped at anything since -- note even her food. The male has never exhibited the slightest defensiveness. Despite their size they are my go-to snakes for people who are uncomfortable around snakes, as they are markedly docile. Easily my favorite animals to work with.

I'd always be in the market for some CBB babies, although I'd like even more to produce my own.
