Guess the color phase!

CHPitt Apr 14, 2008 06:48 PM

Tomorrow i am getting a hatchling corn snake from a friend who works at petco. As usual she has no idea how to take care of animals and when they gave away a free one but they were downsizing she took it for me to take of

Anyway i asked what color and she said "Pink and Red"....Any guesses? I know its vague but a little guessing game is fun and i will post the results tomorrow. Sorry for the longs post.

By the way my guess is Amel

most petcos get their snakes from big breeders that bulk sale. They generally only produce the "cheap and easy" ones to sell. The only phases that I have EVER seen at petcos are Amel, anery, snow and normal. So, my guess - Amel

I saw a really nice reverse okeetee at a petco once - but usually, same thing you've described, though I don't think I've ever seen a normal there.

Just got a picture and yep s/he is a zigzag Amel baby... bad shape thou, it looks very under feed and not very well handled....what do you except from petco tho....

Your first instinct might be to "shovel" the food to it, trying to put some weight back on it, however, offer a VERY small meal, as a small sickly snake that hasn't fed in a long while isn't capable of properly digesting large meals. The very LAST thing you want to do is have the frail snake regurgitate a meal. This will then in turn, cause huge problems with it's electrolyte, and acid/enzyme balance in the stomach, and cause a very serious "domino effect" health-wise, and can lead to the small snake's death rather quickly. So VERY small meals are "key" here for a while. After a good while of SMALL offerings, you could slowly increase the size some. This is EXTREMELY important at this time.

Good luck with your new snake!

Thank you for the tips. When i picked her i up i found out why she was free, besides being skinny she has two spinal kinks and as a little bonus an unshed eye cap. Im not really that concerned about the eye as or right now. Anyway the pinks i have are pretty big so what would be the best way to or if it is even a good idea to cut them down.

DMong Apr 15, 2008 03:04 PM

I would either find "tic-tac" sized newborns somewhere, or cut the ones you have. Make SURE it is SMALL!. maybe 1/2 of a regular sized one, or just the head, whatever seems to be appropriately very small.

The eye-cap you mentioned, if left on could possibly cause huge problems too. It can lead to bacteria/fungus build-up underneath the ocular lens. I've seen snakes before with nasty absesses from this, so put the snake in a small container(don't forget air holes.LOL!) with some very moist spagnum moss, or many pieces of wet sponge, etc...leave the snake in this overnight, and it should easily come off. Do those few things mentioned, and hopefully the snake will do fine, Don't forget to let the small snake have an environment around 80-83 so it can properly digest the meal, this is crutial.

Good luck with it, and let us know how things go!

put the "cut" pinkie in a small plastic deli cup(again with air holes) and put the snake in there with it, this way there won't be any substrate to get stuck all over the bloody cut pinky.
