All three of my Sunglow males shed recently along with two of my Motleys so I got pics of them all....

First up is Apollo, a red line sunglow from Dave Lee. This guy was Daves holdback and is now mine. Thanks Dave!!!

For comparison, I put Apollo together with Chester. Chester was produced by Jason Robeck and IMO is the most intense of my yellow/orange sunglows. You can clearly see that Apollo has a much whiter background.

And this is Cyrus, brother to Chester, he was Jasons holdback and also is now mine. (although I think Chester may have colored up just a little bit more)

Not willing to be outdone, two of my Pastel Motleys also shed, this is Heath (very cool lighter color) who along with his bro Nestle, took on several females this year, outcomes to be determined but looks like at least a couple took!!

And this is Hershey, sister to Heath and Nestle, She continued to eat while her brothers played with the girls and is now bigger like she should be.

Honey, a really cool looking normal pos jungle....

Reeses, the stud that produced my first BCI litter (crappy pics, did not come oout good but...)

Biwa, one of my pearls....

and a lil BRB porn...

Ol yeller finally proved his stuff with Bullseye. Had him in with two young thangs and nothing, guess neither one was ready.

After putting him in with Bullseye and Porky, took a couple of days to shed but once shed was all over Bullseye and she looks gravid already!!! Wham, Bam, Thank you Ma'am!!

And Diablo taking care of Lucy.

I cant pick a favorite. damnit!! I really like Apollo, but that motley boy is a stunner.

I'm going to try really hard to resist the boa until I can get a moonglow, I've got plenty to do between now and then, but some of those crisp sunglows are so tempting!

Good to see Ol Yeller decided to quit teasing. He's quite a color.

ReneeValois Apr 15, 2008 09:51 AM

Those sunglows are so spectacular, Dave! I wish I could talk my husband into a boa constrictor of any kind, but he says "No large snakes!"

It looks like I've finally wrangled him into accepting a blood python for my June birthday present though. ("They only get up to 5 feet or so!" I say.) It helps that my daughter loves their fat-sausage look and is also lobbying for one...

One good point you can use is males can easily be kept smaller? They do not need to get large like the females, in fact smaller males are said to make better breeders!!

I'll have to try the smaller-males size argument with him on the boas.

Frank, my husband's only 5' 6" himself, but we only have TWO kids not a houseful, so hmmmm....

Have you seen the tagline one of the blood python people uses: "9 out of 10 women prefer girth to length" ?

Hi Renee,

There are certain boa constrictors from particular locale's
that are very small relative to "normal" Colombians and BCC's.
Sonorans and Tarahumaras are two examples. If and when I get more snakes, I'll get the latter. Supposedly they reach only about 4 feet or so!

Thanks,
Ed

Ed, if I could GUARANTEE to my husband that the boa would only reach four or five feet, it would probably be doable. I think it's the combination of width and length that he finds alarming. He knows my BRB could get up to 7 feet and that doesn't seem to bother him (since Loki's slender). But he doesn't want a snake around large enough to snack on our cats or appear threatening to humans in any way.

In his defense, he originally said I could get ONE snake, and I'm already up to three with a fourth on the way, so I really can't complain too much. (Each time he's said, "This is the LAST snake!"

Hi Renee,

It's really funny, I'm pretty much in the same position with my wife. She's not a big snake fan either. I wanted the indigo so badly, though, I kind of double talked when she asked me how big he would get.

As a disclaimer, I have no direct experience with "dwarf" boas. But I've read a lot about them, and the experts claim that Sonorans rarely exceed 5 feet, and ones from the Tarahumara
region are even smaller. Regarding width, I don't think it's even close. A blood python would be much, much plumper! If you can find a male Tarahumara or Sonoran, I think you'll be okay. Tough choice, though, since blood pythons are nice too!

I've been in touch with a highly respected breeder, since I'm intereted in getting one. Send me a PM if you want his name, I don't want another post of mine to "disappear."

Thanks,
Ed

What about a hogg island boa? Males are usually only 4', females get up to 6'. They're known for being docile.
