leucistic Burmese Python...?????

ZFelicien Apr 15, 2008 03:21 PM

Is the leucistic Burmese at the Australia Zoo, the only one in existance?

Are any of you US guys in connect with the individuals at that Zoo?

(if so...)

Are there any known plans to breed her (the leucistic) & make them available eventually?

thanx

That is one nice burm. Thanks for sharing those pic's.

If I'm not mistaken I think someone was trying to get a pair of wild-caught imported here to the US several months or so ago. I'm thinking there was a post here in this section about it.

I could easily be thinkin' about a different morph, I am getting old, ya know. Ha!

I do remember that someone posted a pic of that same leucistic burmese python here awhile back and I think they asked what morph it was. Not knowing anything about that particular snake or anything about leucism, and my being pretty much morph-ignorant, I had said that it appeared to be a type of calico. Ha! I was close, 'eh?

Have a good one!

I was the one who posted the pic and asked about it, but no one was sure what it was or where it came from. Are you guys sure it is leucistic? All the lucies I've ever seen where all white.

No, I'm not 100% convinced it's leucistic, or calico. But then again, as I said before, I'm not up to par on genetics, morphs. In all my years as a reptile keeper I was just never interested enough in morphs because I've always liked "normal" patterns & colors more.

I've been reading up on some variations lately, including leucism & calico, and based on what I've read I wouldn't call this particular Burmese python a leucistic or a calico. I think it has too much pigmentation to be considered leucistic and also lacks a pattern with white splotches to be considered a calico.

The snake is still young so hopefully time will tell. From what I've read some young calico can have freckles that later develope (sort of merge) into smudges, but I think there's too many freckles for it to wind up meeting typical calico standards.

For the moment I suppose it's whatever someone wants to call it, in the eye of the beholder. If I had to come down on side or another, leucistic or calico, I'd have to call it a calico. But I'm not an expert, either.

Have a good one!

Jay at Prehistoric Pets has a leucistic burm. I've seen it in person, and it is stunning.

DarkHelmet Apr 23, 2008 12:01 AM

If I remember right the only leucistic burm known is the specimen that was owned by Bob Clark, of which he never could get it to reproduce so he sold it for a chunk. Perhaps this is the snake at Prehistoric Pets?

I don't think it's the same one. The lucy Jay has is too small to try to breed, and I think he said they imported the one he has from outside the country. Here's the picture Jay posted a while back. I hope Jay doesn't mind me re-posting it.

These are pictures of a leucistic gator taken at a small zoo in West Palm Beach. It is kept indoors under fluorescent lighting, I think, which is why it looks a bit yellow. It is brilliant white with those calico spots on it’s head, but it is leucistic. Note the pigmented eyes.
