Het 4 Pied markings, yawning....

XnatX Apr 15, 2008 04:36 PM

Hey everyone!
I am excited to say I got my first ball 1 week ago. He is one beautiful snake! He is supposedly 100% het for pied...this is what the seller told me, and I do believe them...but I can't be certain. I heard there are certain markings on the belly that can indicate a het. Does anyone have one with some pictures of these markings?
Another inquiry.....I read that ball pythons like to "yawn" or stretch their jaws for no particular reason, but that excessive yawning could indicate a repiratory infection. My snake looks perfectly healthy and acts normal, but he does "yawn" alot. I'd say twice an hour. Is this excessive? Your input would be greatly appreciated!!! Cheers,
Nat

I have a shot of the tail marker on my Collection page.

With my balls, "yawning" is a precursor to eating.

Thanks Heat,
Great picture....I'm just confused as to which marking is the het indicator....the small dot in the middle of the belly?
As far as the yawning goes....I haven't fed him since I got him, but he still does the yawning thing. I think he might be a bit small for how old he is supposed to be (1.5 years). What would a normal weight/size be for a male that age? Thanks,
Nat

if he isn't gurgling, drooling or bubbling any liquids, he's probably ok. some snakes seem to yawn more, babies seem like they do it more often. If he starts wheezing (not hissing) or making popping noises, you may wish to up his heat source and be sure to call the reptile vet if you see him getting symptoms like i listed.
