Panamanian litter #2!

ChrisGilbert Apr 16, 2008 10:29 AM

Born earlier today, this is my dad's second litter, as well as the second litter of Panamanian BCI born from the first group to come in after the ten year export ban from Panama!

17 babies, 5 slugs. So not perfect, but all 17 babies are!

This breeding was between a perfect, normal, symmetrical female, and an aberrant male with a small reverse stripe. You can see that the patterns are well defined, a few have aberrancies. Doesn't answer all questions, but it does seem to be heritable to a degree. Hopefully Matt Lerer will get some nice litters from his FULLY Reverse Striped Hypos and that will do more to mark the trait as genetic.

It also appears 22 Ova are right on par for at the least first time mothers!

Just beautiful and thanks for the POS timing...now I am really freaking out lol. Can you milk babies from a snake?

Not sure about that, lol. What date are you on?

Yeah, sorry we didn't have a POS time on the other female. Would have really helped. I sure expected them to be shorter than Colombians like other Central American boas are. However it is too early to say that they are notoriously longer gestation periods. We do just have the one sample for now.

Keep me posted with the POS times you get for your litters. It will be good information to add to the "history". Not often an opportunity comes along to follow a locale in captivity like these guys so I want to do what I can!

Matt, sorry I could't give you a POS date on the last litter, but she just didn't shed. The first mother did shed at about the same time her babies did after the birth.
This female DID give me a POS and I had counted out the 105 day looking for the litter to be born last week.
I know I checked her last night before I went to be around 1:30 am and she was cruising the cage pretty heavy, but no waxy plug- so I figured another day or two. Woke up to find them all delivered by 6:30 this morning.

There are a few with some mid body reverse striping, but nothing right on the tail like dad has.

I think we all know how much you like to play in the goo!!
If you notice, with a little misting, they swim around quite well in the crappy grey cage they were born in!

I was more nervous about the second litter. After having such succcess on the first pair, I was afraid it would all blow up in my face and have the second litter slug out.
While it wasn't the perfect slugless litter we had the first time, I'll take 17 healthy little wigglers!
