what are signs of impaction

Ravingphule Apr 16, 2008 07:16 PM

Something i have never had to deal with...My Uro is active, likes to run around his tank like a mad man...he is eating well but I haven't seen any poop...I have seen the strange white stuff that usually comes with the poop but no actual brown stools for 2 days now...what are the signs and when should I worry? He's on newspaper for substrate and I feed Nederlanders Parakeet seed and an assortment of mixed greens, and mixed veg every2-3 days also a finely ground lentil mix

I have never had a uro get an impaction but many(at least more than a few) times they have not "pooped" for a few days. BUT,what may have been a "mild impaction"??? once or twice, a hatchling that went everyday didn't poop for almost a week, was eating furiously(as always, but maybe a bit more), looked pretty bloated, then finally had a HUGE one. The first time I gently palpated and soaked/floated the belly,(I was concerned with the bloating not sure if it would have resolved on it's own). The next time it resolved on it's own in 5 days. Not sure if that qualifies as a true impaction or constipation from furious aegyptia style eating. Best I can do for you, noone is probably concerned being it has only been a few days.

I think if you cut down, or hold off on feeding the seed for a few days your uro should go on their own. Just be sure to pick a staple leafy green with higher fiber. Misting the greens with a bit of extra water may help if there is any dehydration too. At two days I wouldn't be too worried yet, some only go a few times a week, especially as they get older.

Impacted/blocked animals will tend to stop eating after a while, not always the case though.
