Uros and bugs

Rosebuds Apr 16, 2008 07:29 PM

I am fairly new to keeping uros, but not new to lizards. My two charges are doing great, eating well, and are very colorful under their megarays.

I have a question, though, about feeding insects. I have read more care sheets that say do not feed any insects than those that advocate feeding insects, yet I see ads in the classifieds and see threads in which uros are being fed some to mostly bugs. Should I feed my guys any bugs, or just keep them on the salad, beans, flowers, etc.?

It's a highly debated topic, depending on who you talk to. A long time ago, I tried offering the occasional cricket or super to my uros. Only one would even accept them - and only crickets at that. After more reading, I've decided not to offer any insect matter. My uros have been bug free for a few years now and get their protein from plant sources. If you do choose to feed bugs, keep it to a minimum (only a couple insects once in a long while) as large amounts of animal protein can lead to problems like gout.

Yeah, the more trusted sources that I read say no, so I am going to refrain.

I do have a question about protein, though. I feed my uros and birds a good bean mix, and remove the kidney beans for the uros. The mix has cracked cooked corn, a variety of beans and peas, some rice, some seed, some fruit, and pasta. I feed the uros some of that on their salad about three times a week, removing most of the pasta, and all of the kidney beans. Then I feed small seed, spring mix, dandelion, some hybiscus as I can snip leaves, bok choy, some collards and some turnip greens daily. Is there another readily available high protein food or plant that I can feed them? My Ngozi is a baby, so I do worry about the protein levels.

No bugs.
