Two Iguana Trouble?

dodgedakota09 Apr 16, 2008 10:22 PM

I have read that having two iguanas is not good, on the other hand i've also read just the opposite...

question is what if i have a male and a female... clearly there shouldn't be a fight for dominance right?

you shouldn't necessarily have dominance issues but when they become sexually mature you will probably have some problems on your hands. mature male iguanas are very aggressive when "in season" and can hurt and/or kill females in an attempt to mate, not to mention the undo stress to the female from the male constantly attempting to mate with her. i only say this because i once had two iguanas, a male and a female, caged seperately but in the same room. the male physically broke the screen out of his cage, climbed to the top of hers and knocked her heat lamps down, almost catching my house on fire. and trying to get him off of her cage wasnt fun either. As juveniles i think it may be feasible in a large cage to keep them together if necessary, but i really would advise against it when they are older.

Not to mention the fact that if your iggies came from different regions, then they have different breeding seasons. The time for e female to be receptive is much shorter than the time the males wishes for her to be. In essence, you ended with a male who forces himself upon a female who cannot escape as she could in the wild.

Also, there are dominance issues, even between male/female pairs. One can intimidate the other away from food, heat, UV, etc. Fights in cages can lead to broken toes, limbs, tails, infected bites.

I would not keep two igs together once they hit breeding age. Just my $.02 worth.

I would plan on separate cages.

I do have to ask, is that a heatrock that the one is laying
on? I can't tell from the picture but if it is I would get
rid of it now. These are unnatural for iguanas and cause
severe burns.

Also, the substrate that you are using dries out the environment
and can cause impaction. Iguanas need humidity which is very
difficult to get especially with this kind of substrate. Use
regular old newspaper or paper towels. It's not the best looking
but it is cheap and there is no chance for impaction.

Just my thoughts on your set-up.

Yes, that was a heat rock and yes it has sense been removed, i use a heat lamp now and that substrate was temporary as i was short on doe that month and had plenty of snake substrate but i did mist the cage as well as the iguanas down daily...

anyway I've read that the mature age is around two, so then they should be fine til they are about two correct... I'm converting an armoire 70" by 40" by 22" into a cage for the two less than two foot iguanas so that should give them plenty of space til then... I'm putting in to seperate basking areas with two seperate heat lamps as well as two seperate feeding bowls...

hopefully this will limit what my be inevitable... when they reach two the summer of my junior and senior year in college i should have enough money to convert an identical armoire into another cage...
