Tenn. Aquarium Experiment

bonomoc08 Apr 17, 2008 02:09 PM

When I went away on spring break to visit my sister in Alabama, we went to the Tennessee Aquarium. Now, for those of you that have been to the Florida Aquarium, the Tennessee one puts it to shame. Anyways, they have been doing an experiment with an eastern box turtle since it was born over four years ago, and that experiment is, housing it in a 20L tank, with no UVB lights, and a half-land, half-water setting to see if higher moisture will stop pyramiding. Now, its fed on high protien fish food and superworms, and so far, it's doing just fine, nice hard shell (I was able to talk one of the keepers into letting me see it out of the tank), and no pyramiding, which I think is very interesting. Has anyone else ever done this with success? Also, I heard they're doing something similar in South America with redfoots, but I don't have any info. on that.

Thanks, Cliff

Go to Redfoots.com He NEVER uses UVB lights on his Redfoots. He is a breeder and his pictures of his tortoises are just beautiful. He believes exactly what you said about the no UVB.

I wonder if this would work with sulcatas too? Would be an interesting research topic.

I agree, sulcatas were the first thing I thought of.
