Suboc ticks

Some of you guys may be interested in this tidbit:
Large w/c female suboc from RR between Terlingua and Lajitas.
Was given a thorough going-over and treated with prevent-a-mite just in case.
Cooled all winter.
Took her out several weeks ago, and noticed a tick.
Then another.
And Another.
All told, she had just over 30 suboc ticks on her. None on her tail, all along the upper belly scutes on the lower side of the animal. All of the ticks were small, and none were engorged.
She is eating and all is well, but I know some people ( like Dusty) like to hear this stuff.

Yeah, it's usually the larger, engorged female ticks that end up on the tail. Read Degenhardt and Degenhardt's paper (1965) in the Southwestern Naturalist. It describes what happened to your snake. Pretty neat, the symbiotic relationship subocs have with those Aponomma ticks. Thanks for sharing!

Remember the ticks are not in contact with the Prevent a Mite if their heads are inside the snake feeding. Remember the key word PREVENT.

happened with that nice orange male I got on RR last Spring. Treated with provent-a-mite, but found two huge engorged ticks on his tail in the fall!
