Sadly, OT

medyssa Apr 18, 2008 09:16 PM

Well, sadly, Uber (my carpet chameleon) died today, I dont know why, looks like from his position he either keeled over or hurt himself going after prey. His tongue was all out around him so I don't know for sure. I am not too broken up about it though, he had been completely healthy and I have no idea of his age since he was WC but he was very enjoyable while I had him, I dont think I will work with chameleons anymore though.

Ps- Sorry to hear about your girl-loss Dave, as long as I sexed Z&Z correctly I feel good though! When do I get to see some new pictures of them?!

I knew as soon as I saw the post what it was going to be. He was such a cool looking little dude.

Yup, Z&Z were sexed correctly, no bb's on Zoe and definite bb's on Ziggy.

Yeah, but I guess I was always kinda prepared for it. At this point I've had such a bad year for losses, I'm not as sad as I normally would have been.
But, it happens.

Jess,
...I am really sorry. He was a cute little guy. Carpet Chams are known for being difficult to keep. Most of us who have been keeping herps have tried and failed with at least a few difficult species. Sometimes we figure out how to do better next time and sometimes we just decide to not try that particular species again. I see all of it as a learning experience. We can learn from our successes and sometimes we learn as much or more from our failures.
Jeff

I'm so sorry to hear that your little guy didn't make it. Chams are so good at hiding it when they are sick, so it is sometimes hard to notice when they are ill. Hopefully his death won't discourage you from Chams forever.

Most wild caught Chams are known to look in perfect health one day and die unexpectedly without a "known" reason on another.

Most times the error in husbandry is undetected because they die with such a quick and sudden onset, baffling the keeper as to what they have done "wrong".

There a reason you usually only see Veilds and Panther chameleons that are captive bred and hatched into several generations.

Most others have not even come close to being figured out.

While many different species are available in the pet trade they usually do not live very long under most keepers care.

This is one of the reasons I have never kept any. Have always wanted to. I have kept several different types of lizards most memorably where Day Geckoes and Fire Skinks (even bred them once).

Chams I hear are not for the faint of heart in regards to losses.
