dead on the roads of Mexico

jimfmcdonald Apr 19, 2008 01:44 AM

I was looking through some old photos I had of a snake hunting trip I took about 20 years ago driving around all of Mexico. I found this photo I took of a few snakes I found dead on the roads but I don't recall if I was ever able to ID them all. I do remember finding one Boa in Mazatlan, and one in Tampico, so these were taken close to one of those two areas. That's about all the info I have. Can someone give me a Id on them from the top down? Thanks.

Top to bottom: 1-5

1&5 Crotalus atrox

2 Trimorphodon sp.

3 Boa constrictor

I recognize 4, but cannot get my brain cells working well enough to spit out the name.

I would say you were on the west coast because I don't think you find Trimorphodon near Tampico, particularly down in the lowlands there.

So from top to bottom

Crotalus atrox
Trimorphodon biscutatus
Boa constrictor
Leptodeira sp. or Pseudoficimia sp. (need a larger photo)
Crotalus atrox

However, I don't recall if atrox actually gets over there on the west coast of Sinaloa, which makes me wonder. The crotes aren't C. basiliscus but they might be C. scutulatus? I'd have to check range maps for big mexican Crotalus.

From what I can see,....

#1...Western Diamondback(Crotalus atrox)
#2...Lyre Snake(Trimorphodon bisculatus)
#3...Boa Constrictor(Boa constrictor imperator)
#4...Cat-Eyed Snake(Leptodeira annulata), or other ssp.
#5...Western Diamondback(Crotalus atrox)

pic is sort of far away, but that's my take on it.

Thanks, Chis & Doug. Leptodeira was what my brain cells couldn't come up with at 5 this morning.
