Its a great question Jonathan. Actually its just a nickname for a "look" that Rich has been working on for years. The quest has always been to produce the reddest Salmon possible, and this particular lineage within the collection is doing just that!
The Blood boa was/is another way, in fact a genetic way to produce red Salmons, but the Cherry Salmon is simply the result of breeding the reddest Salmon to the reddest Salmon over the years.
This particular litter is somewhat significant in that it may be the first "all super" litter of Supersalmons resulting from a "Cherry Project- proven Supersalmon" animal bred to a "Cherry Project proven Supersalmon" animal! We should know for sure in the next couple of months if the 05' Cherry Supersalmon litter was in fact all Supers because we bred their littermates to such things as other Supersalmons, Coral Sunglows, Contrasty albinos, etc..
If you breed a Blood boa to a Salmon you will get Salmons 100% HET. Blood. If you breed a Cherry Supersalmon to that same Salmon you will get a great looking litter of Supers and Salmons, or maybe all Supers, with an incredibly huge CHERRY RED influence!
So ultimately its just a name for a line we are working with, just as Dave pointed out he has his own line of "Cherry Salmons". Our goal is to make them distinguishable by their aberrancies that we are also trying prove out to be genetic in some fashion!
I hope to see other people who purchased some of the 05' litter produce Salmons from them! I will get a bunch more photos of these guys after they shed!
Thanks much,
John
