Hide Boxes..Update

panhead Apr 19, 2008 10:24 PM

Someone posted a few weeks ago asking about hide boxes. Attached are a couple of photos of what I use for hide boxes. For hatchlings I use the 8oz deli cups then I go to the rubber maid drawer organizer boxes. For adults I use two different size cat litter boxes. Using an adjustable drill saw blade I make the various size holes. I put the holes into the bottom of the hides as opposed to the front because I normally feed live. If you have a hole in the front of the hide box the rodent will almost always run into the box. This way it is harder for the rodent to encounter and or startle the snake. I have noticed as well that if the snake is hungry they will rest about the first third of the body on top of the hide.

Bruce, I like the Rubbermaid drawer hide, I had never considered that before.

One of my favorite DIY hides are used ice cream pails. They work great for most of my adults. I simply cut them down to the appropriate depth required for the individual snake and then put an opening a little bigger than the widest part of the snake in the side.

However, after looking at your design I think I'll try a few with the hole in the top. I've seen commercial hides like that but it never occurred to me to do the same.
