Is my bloodred fat? Opinions wanted pic

HerpZillA Apr 20, 2008 01:34 PM

This is my oldest bloodred. I believe he will be 3 years old this year, making him an 05. He's the nastiest snake I ever owned, and that includes blood pythons, an anaconda and a african rock python. He just nuts. But that in itself make me love this guy.

He never seems to be full. Althought his head is small as you can see, he takes small to almost medium rats now. Doing mice was just crazy. After 2-3 he would thrash around his cage/tub looking for more. He now shedding about once every 2-3 weeks. And is probably nearly 4'. Hes hard to measure with his attitude.

So, what ya think?

I'll call him think. I've seen snakes as round as him, but soft and mushy. He's rock solid. If I can n't find a set of lizards soon, he may go in my 75 gal. If so I hope he will be active, and not just hide, or he'll be back in the rack.

I should take a video of him. Then you can see his speed and strength.

I think he's a very well-fed "freak devil"!..LOL!

Seriously though, it might be a little chunky at this point, but not really overly so. But I would keep an eye on him in the future, and not let him get byond the point that he is now. Like many other snake's, when they reach full adulthood, they tend to put on more weight due to the fact they aren't growing much more, and their metabolisms change somewhat(just as humans do).
But since he's still fairly young(3 years), and continues to shed at a rather rapid rate, he still apparently has a little more growing to do.

If it where mine, I would soon slow down his intake some, as it being a male, you certainly don't NEED any extra weight on him for egg production,.....not to mention the fact that sometimes over-feeding males can tend to make them somewhat "lazy", and sometimes a little less enthusiastic about wandering around in search of a female at breeding time, you usually want them to be slim and trim, and very fit.

So, thats my problem?

If it was me I would feed him either one large mouse or one small rat each week.
Let him be a pain in the ass and keep looking for food.
It will be good exercise.
I think he is right on the verge but it is hard to tell from photos.
if you can get a photo looking straight down at him I'm sure someone here could use Serp's program to get a close measurement.

good estimate on his size. While I got him on the couch, he actually calmed down a bit. So I placed him on the floor to get a picture as my wood is exactly 3" wide. Well that picture was impossible, but I was able to straighten him out, and he was 16 boards plus maybe a little, so he's just at 4'.

Reasonably sized pic below, but also a link to a 1.2 meg picture with my hand.

hahahaha

Normally I feed a bit heavy for the first 2 years on snakes and they are growing a lot. By that time they usually get a little laid back. He's only 3, so could he break 5'? That would be a lot of red, and he has not really darkened yet.

Now I just need 3-4 females. I lost that one finally I was nursing for 8 months. I have a green rat snake I always joke I will hybrid him to to make Xmas hybrids. That aint going to happen. My 07 female triaspis will prolly get two 08 1.1 additions.

hopefully I can pick up a few females this year. This time to iffy stuff. That last one was painfull to deal with.

Thanks for all teh kind words

I think it's a bit obese.

Have you tried that brine shrimp diet that someone was talking about here on the posts last week? I have four of my corn snakes on it right now.

HerpZillA Apr 20, 2008 08:47 PM

Brine can raise blood pressure. I often use the shrimp diet. It is very well known snakes are adverse to cholesterol issue, so it works well. It's expensive, but much better than the cheapo brine shrimp way.

He is stunning, even if a little round. I bet my male ghost is meaner though. I would never be able to put him down on the carpet like that, he would be gone instantly. And anytime I pick him up he whips his body so hard I think he is going to break something, 3 years old and he even tried to musk me the other day and bit me three times. Makes him mad that biting me doesn't bother me, lol.

Just bred him this past week or so, and son of a gun, it just made him meaner!

Got to love it, they all have their own personalities.
