New ball python-healthy??

Geckoharmony Apr 20, 2008 04:30 PM

Hi, recently purchased a couple of ball pythons. One of them is acting a little funny. We have noticed him elevating his head a couple of times during the day, once when we looked into his hide, and another time after being placed back into his cage. He remains in this position for an extended period. No bubbles around snout, no weezing or clicking that I can hear. His head is also a little shaky from side to side once in a while. He is eating regularly...F/T mice, kept between 80-90, humidity is a little low sometimes-around 45%. I have read a posture like this could be signs of respiratory problems, looking to avoid that. Could a course of antibiotics be beneficial, any negative effects if there aren't any problems? Thanks a TON for any help!

Nope, I am curious though why you ask. Thanks.

Some spiders have the unfortunate disorder of "spinning" not ot be confused with Spinners- a spider mix fancy BP. Spinning is head wobbling and is considered to be something wrong with the snake, possibly neurological. Some people have been scammed by getting a spinning spider sold to them, which is very sad. I'd say takje him to a vet and see what's up. make sure they are a good herp vet!

your humidity doesn't need to be 90% ... thats high--- thats what we have emerald tree boa cages at--- rainforst animals...

you might just run him into the vet for a looky-loo--- always better to have a vet and be an established patient-- BEFORE you need one...

Thanks for the input, I may have been a bit vague in my message, temps are between 80-90 degrees and humidity is around 45%. Thanks

ooooh-
it was late- i thought you said your humidity was 80-90 % and occasionally 45%.... i was like- woah- thats wet dude... lol

i still think a vet trip would be in best order-- if it is an URI, its FAR easier to treat, and cheaper, if its caught early- you don't want to wait until you see bubbles or anything-- then its harder, more expensive, more meds, and harder on the snake-- and you.

As for the question about it being a spider--- many spider morphs have a 'head wobble'-- they will turn their heads upside down-- and spin/twist around-- its strange....
