feeding question

teddy311 Apr 20, 2008 11:40 PM

I just purchase a male pastel and he was being fed live rat pups. where i live it is almost impossible to find live rat food of any kind. will they usually take to f/t? or whats the deal?

That is something that you should have been asking before you got it , but sometimes they will if it is properly thawed and presented , having live pray is part of the conversion processes for the ones that don’t take to f/t right off , another ting you can try is if live rats aren’t available you can try live mice .if you need to know how to feed with F/T rodents E-Mail me and I will fill you in . OK. David

well my female eats f/t. so i know how to feed them and my male hasnt arrived yet he will be here tomorrow, but i was just wondering if there are alot of problems switching them over

Like I said some go right to it and some take a little more work and yet some it takes a act of congress LOL. , I have only found 2 that I could not convert fully to F/T and they will take them half of the time , they are long term captive wild caught that had always been fed live .good luck . I have always successfully switched to FT. (I also have no access to live). I've only switched about ten, so it may just be luck, but There are lots of different things you can try. If your snake is on the way, it may be a good time of year to switch him too. IF he was off feed for the winter, it may help. I have found that once they do take FT, they will continue. If he is fasting, he will be VERY hungry when he decides to eat again. That may help.
I have a couple that still require, what my daughters call, "the rat dance", but I have few enough that I can take the time to do it! You may just have to work at it until you figure out what works for your snake. Patience=success.
Good luck!
