strange shed?

scottc Apr 21, 2008 10:44 AM

MY BLACK RAT WAS TRYING TO SHED LAST NIGHT AND I DIDNT EVEN KNOW HE WAS IN THE BLUE. HE WAS REAL UNCOMFORTABLE AND WHEN I PICKED HIM UP HE STARTED TWISTING IN MY HANDS TRYING TO SHED, SO I SOAKED HIM AND HE SHED NO PROBLEM. DO SSOME SNAKES NOT GO IN THE BLUE PHASE BEFORE SHED? I SAW HIM EVERY DAY AND HE WAS NEVER OPAQUE!

That doesn't sound too likely,......you must have just missed seeing it. They typically shed 2 to 5 days AFTER the eyes totally clear again, depending on activity level.

Also at least some snakes/species not only have the eyes clear but also the entire body is normal colored between the blue phase and actually shedding. My BRB's will regularly go close to a week looking normal after being blue but before shedding. I suspect you just missed the blue phase.

Shedding habits in most of my snakes are very individualistic. Doesn't seem, otehr tehn humidity level, to follow species lines. And I wouldn't count on appetite to gauge shed cycling. At least with one of my Brazilian Rainbow Boa's they have eaten one to two meals between when they first went blue and when they final shed. Each snake is it's own path of discovery
