i have had 2 savannah monitor lizards that lived til they got about 3 ft long and both died. am i doing somthing wrong, i dont think neither was older than 3 years

Not enough info you need to give habitat stats temps size all that good stuff and then diet everything if you want any opinions also research the forum.

read through this forum. pay close attention to posts by robyn@proexotics, FR, and mikes monitors. they seem to be the most informed. sorry if i missed anybody.
it sounds like your monitors have lived to the limits of your provided husbandry. so you would need to drastically improve your husbandry.
armed with the right info, it really isn't that hard.
check out our site for a simple Sav caresheet. check out the monitor FAQ as well.
get a copy of the Sav book by Bennett, available at our site, or here on the classifieds. you will then have all the info you need, you just have to then apply it to a good setup : )
