Birth Gone Wrong?

novasnake Apr 21, 2008 05:30 PM

I got back today and found my snake had laid eggs. I am not a breeder, just had snakes all of my life and my two happened to be together for one night of love.

She laid 5 eggs and now has a HUGE lump at her very lower body. She looked like this before she laid the eggs, but is this a sign she is having trouble getting the others out? do i need to take her to the vet or will she just lay the rest in a bit? I took out the moss to take a picture, this is what her body is looking like.

If the female isn't able to pass them on her own within the next 24 hours or so, I would strongly suggest that you see a competent reptile vet. If the vet can't palpate the eggs out(looks like around 5 left), then he/she will have to stick a large syringe needle between the ribs, and draw out enough egg contents for them to be passed. This is VERY taxing on the female's strength, and many times they take a break, then resume depositing the eggs a little while later.

Remember, if the eggs don't come out fairly soon by whatever method, it can lead to the snake's death, so it's extremely important that she passes them,......one way, or another.

hope things go well for her!, let us know how things go.

best regards, ~Doug

give her a little time (maybe 24 hours) to work it out on her own.
There are a few posts below about what to do with an eggbound snake.

I agree with the others. The first time my snake had eggs "purposely" I was about to remove her and move the eggs to the incubator and I noticed one large bulge in her lower body. I went about my business and did my thing and finally about 4 hours later she had laid the rest. just give her some time. It dosnt look to me like she is having much problems but looks can be deceiving. Just leave her alone and see what happens. Check her again in 24 hours and she will more than likely have dropped the rest of her eggs. Remember disturbing her will just prolong the process and add to the stress.
