Fea's venom

BGF Aug 30, 2003 12:34 AM

In all the noise generated by the 'colubrid' parts, the viper venom results have been overlooked. I found the relationship between Fea's and wagler's to be pretty cool.

Do your findings agree with the theory that Fea's vipers are very closely related to the pit vipers? They're a species I'm very interested in.

Yep, our venom results match the genetic results that place them at the base of the pitviper tree rather than with the true vipers. All three toxin classes we isolated match up strongly with the pitviper homologs rather than the viper equivalents. Thats fairly telling. The venom looks like it'll be quite potently neurotoxic but in a unique way like the Wagler's does. Looks like it should also give the blood a nice smack as well.

Cheers
