Ideal Substrate(s)

seablazer Aug 30, 2003 12:37 AM

What does everyone prefer for their substrate, specifically Blackthroats...

I was going to go all topsoil, you know, the big bags from Home Depot. But I've heard that they are usually not all pure T. Soil. I was thinking about digging up the backyard and mixing in some Aspen since cypress mulch is hard to find in NY..

Would that be ideal or should I just go pure dirt.

you just need to try stuff and see what works. by your post, i can see you have no idea, so get your hands dirty and dig it up, see what holds a good burrow, good moisture, etc. we do have a store bought "mix" recipe at our site's FAQ, that may be a start for you.

i can tell you that aspen would be completely useless though, and is a horrible idea for an "additive".
