Oranges with peel safe for beardies?

ziggypiggy Apr 22, 2008 12:33 PM

I put a piece of orange in my bearded dragon's cage for any stray uneaten crickets to nibble on. It was a small section and still had the peel attached. The next morning it was gone, so my beardie ate it. Will the peel of this orange cause a problem or will my bearded dragon be all right?

citrus fruits are not good for dragons ....if the piece was small it shouldn't be a problem. The main issue is citrus fruit is very high in Vit. A (Or C, though this flushes out so isn't much a concern) which isn't good for dragons to get too much of.

It is better to remove all the crickets from the cage instead of trying to feed them. If you have to feed the crickets in the bearded dragon cage, just use the same greens you feed the dragon. A very shadow water dish with water is fine too. Actually a deeper water dish works good as the crickets end up drowning in it and thus, no longer a worry.

Thank you for the information. Earlier today the beardie in question passed the orange, as his stools were orange-colored. Kind of almost worked like a laxative, as he went twice. I was worried that the peel would not digest properly and would cause an impaction/prolapse.
