What kind of snake is this?

karent999 Apr 22, 2008 04:12 PM

Saw this snake during a bike ride on 4/20/08. I think the picture shows the colors, size and markings pretty well. There is a river and also a stream nearby in these woods. Was in NE Illinois........... town of Channahon. It was a sunny, 72 deg. day.

That's a nice looking Bullsnake(Pituophis melanoleucus sayi). They are totally harmless to humans, and can make nice pets. Nice find!

Hehe! I checked the picture, said, "That looks like a Bullsnake, let's see what Doug said.." and boom... hey, I was right. ^_^

My mother found a beautiful bullsnake in Alamogordo, New Mexico back in '88 or '89. Only had one fuzzy Polaroid of it, though. :P He was very thick (the animal rescue guys who came to move him were picking through the woodpile to find him and picked up him instead of a log, that's how thick) and very close to 6' long. She called the animal rescue guys only because we were on base at Holloman AFB and she was concerned that one of the guys there might freak out and shoot it. :P

When I get interested in a subject (animals, plants, people, whatever) I tend to go all out. I'm working on a research paper right now on autism and Asperger syndrome.. My older son is high-functioning autistic.

Heck, I studied horses for about a dozen years before Mom finally bought me Bagan. I had read at least a hundred horse books in the process. ^_^

>>> "When I get interested in a subject (animals, plants, people, whatever) I tend to go all out".

Yeah, that's how I am too, I don't like NOT knowing about something I'm doing either,.....WHATEVER it may be.

As to your statement above, I tend to find that out of all the interesting things in the universe, and on our planet,....people seem to be the very LEAST interesting of the choices!.....I find that snake's are much smarter than many of the people I've met!..LOL!

best regards, ~Doug
