Baja Banded Conjunctas

Ameron Apr 22, 2008 09:13 PM

I just got my first Conjuncta. Awesome; magnificent.

I rarely see any references to this subspecies. Having known one Nitida, I'm particularly intrigued by the patterns, coloration & behavior of *Baja* specimens.

It's interesting to me that although Baja Kings are classed as a variant of Cal Kings, they show at least 3 major traits more similar to Sonoran Blacks: coloration & patterns, belly color, snout shape.

Any other King fans out there have Conjunctas? Please share your photos & stories of unique behavior.

I've had a lone female "Nitida" for a couple of years now, and just recieved a male from Karl Doerflein today. I'll get pics of him ASAP. I've seen a few "Conjuncta" around as well, but haven't
had a chance to get a pair yet. Quit teasing us and post some photos of yours.

I have a nitida, but i don't know what conjuncta is, mine is dark hershey brown with lighter brown (like the tan m&m's) pattern like camoflage with banded tail. Sorry I can't post a pic but i don't have a camera right now. I haven't been able to find much information or pictures of this snake so I'm dying to see what some others look like.

I concur, let's see whatcha got there man. Baja conjunctas have some of the best black/white ever. I was supposed to score a pair two years ago from a prominent kingsnake person (name withheld) but due to prematurely shedding the snakes prior to a herp show and the snakes then looking sticky and in pain, I decided to not make the purchase. I have yet to find such a pair again that had almost no broken bands that were extremely thin. Please do share a pic!!!

To post a photo! I don't see any Upload option on my screen, nor any way to type a path to a photo file. What am I missing?

Baja specimens that I've seen all seem to have one thing in common: silver/tan, slim lines - whether striped or banded. Some look cinnamon, or light brown, but they really are silvery.

Here is a description of my Conjuncta male. I'll post a photo when I learn how. (Go ahead and mock & chide.)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dealer: (Californian)
Cost: $50
Sex: male
Age: 2007 hatchling
Length: 14 inches
Width: No wider than a pencil at widest girth.
Awesome Baja patterns & colors. Body is dark brownish-black, with thinner bands than those on most Cal Kings (like a Yuma phase). Bands are a silver color that look chalky white, fuller on the bottom than the very narrow tops.
Head is almost completely black. Only lower jaw has light speckling (like a Black King). Snout is narrow & spoon-like, with wide jowls and blunt nose (like a Nigrita more than a Californiae.)
Okay, hopefully someone has already emailed you about it, but this is what I showed Doug...
If you upload your pictures into say... Photobucket.. there's a VERY easy way to post them. (BTW: Moderators, if you'd rather I don't post this here, delete it and I'll email him)
See where I clicked.. it says IMG Code, which is for forums like this one. Just copy the code there and paste it.
If you use a different site to host your pictures, then you need to get the url of the picture and put an [img] tag at the front of it.
After the url, put a [./img] tag but without the .
I've not used that software or site, and have only uploaded photo files directly as .jpg files.
Shall I contact the Moderator for a lesson in posting?
Her dorsal stripe is so faint & light. Most are more distinct, even if broken & aberrated.
She also has more side blotching than most. Also absent are the two side stripes where her sides meet the belly. Female nitidas often have the two, white side stripes.
Love the Baja wonders...
Patton Apr 27, 2008 01:24 PM
She definitely has the lateral stripe. As for the
blotched sides, most of the Nitidas that I have seen have some degree of blotching. Here's some old picks that may give you a better view. The sad thing with Conjuncta and Nitida is that not many people are working with them, and the few that are have animals with questionable lineage at best. I would love to find some true locale specific Nitida and Conjuncta, but I've never seen them offered.
Here's the parents of the one I just sent Phil
This looks like a desert phase Cal King.
No black head, has Cal King dot at back of head.
No ghostly, silver, ultra light banding.
White side stripes are not "ghosted" with black scales.
