I believe there is a small plant called Rattlesnake, could be a reference to that. Which state is it in?
Could be that the creek winds around a lot, and made the namer think of a snake.

If you're in the USA, I doubt it's because of the plant, but good to know I wasnt smoking crack when I thought about it.

There are crotalids in the state, but any in this area were extirpated long ago. What I like most about is the implication that people must see the name and be seized by the fear that a rattlesnake will suddenly appear. One man's fear is another man's hope!
