New girl and new home

wftright Apr 22, 2008 09:36 PM

I just received my new girl from vichris. He made sure that she would take f/t, and she arrived looking healthy and happy. I snapped a couple of pictures of her and a picture of her temporary home.

For the time being, I'm going to put her in a little Kritter Keeper cage. I'll convert her to a 20 gallon sometime soon, but I think she'll be happy enough in the Kritter Keeper for a little while. She has a warm hide, a cool hide, a big water bowl, a little water bowl, and a little plant. At first, I left the deli cup and with paper towel in the cage on top of the warm hide. I've now removed the cup but put the paper towel in her warm hide. She ignored all of this stuff and hid between the paper bag substrate and the underlying newspaper. My other thayeri did the same thing when he first arrived. I guess she'll come out from under the papers when she's thirsty.

Has anyone ever made substrate for a thayeri by running newspaper through a shredder? I think both of mine would like that substrate.

She doesn't have a name yet. I've looked through a couple of lists of Spanish names, but nothing jumps out at me. Her designation with vichris was LE705, and I'm tempted to name her "Ellie" as a play on "LE."

As always, I'm open to suggestions on how to keep her healthy and happy.

Thanks,

Bill

I used to run newspapers through the shredder when i didnt have as many snakes... They seem to Love it!!! i actually still use the shredded newspaper on newbies... my black rat and most of my w/c ltc corns LOVE the newspaper. it actually makes cute lil mounds and they stay under alot.... the only problem is the newspaper got int he water bowl at times and its a lil dry for shedding... but i'm sure if you're smarter than me, you'll find a way to make it better and congrats on your new baby!!! shes a cutie!!! if you want to play off the LE you can name her Leyla or something cute like that

I may have to try the newspaper idea. One nice thing about moving her to the 20 gallon aquarium will be that I can do a variety of things in terms of habitat. I may get a dish or plastic cake pan to fill with shredded paper. That way, she can crawl through the shredded papers as she wants and then leave when she needs more moisture.

One handy way of making a humid hide for something small like a thayeri hatchling is to fill a parrot feeder with moss. I did that with my first one. Here's a picture of his tail sticking out of the moss.

I like Ellie, but I'd like Ellie Mae better. Did she eat yet?

I thought about calling her Ellie April because she arrived in April. I'm settling towards Ellie, but I have a friend who doesn't name them until they eat for her. I might wait until she eats before making anything final.

I haven't offered her anything yet. I just bought some pinkies tonight. I was thinking that I'd give her a try either tomorrow night or Friday night. I haven't even looked at her enough to see whether she seems comfortable with the new home. I suspect that she's back under the paper. I'll probably change her water tonight and see how she's doing.

Rocket ate again last night. I suspect that his last refusal might have been because he'd just shed that day. Some of my other snakes need at least 24 hours after shedding before they are really ready to eat.

Thanks! The white in the picture may be slightly overexposed. In real life, the white isn't quite as bright in every lighting at every angle, but the white really is that clean. The white isn't an off-white or light yellow. The white is white. She's a gorgeously contrasty little girl.

Yep, the contrast of the strong white, strong black, and deep red is beautiful. I had considered getting a zonata one time in order to get those colors. I've seen a few other MSP thayeri that I liked, but none have impressed me as much as this one. Now, I have a female thayeri and a red, white, and black snake in one.

She would go well with this little 07 MSP male of mine from John Cherry. He is from a Laredo line male paired to a melanistic female. His white is very white:

They look very similar. Of course, with thayeri, who knows what any pairing will produce?
