ahaetulla prasina - male or female??

drunk_on_chivas Aug 30, 2003 02:58 AM

i have an ahetulla prasina.....was thinking of getting another one of opposite sex so they can breed. How do i tell if the one i'm having now is a male a female?

personally I have allways been able to eyeball. They have the same bulge for male skiny tail for female that most Oglyphs and colubrids have. It is best to have several to compare from because these are a bit trickier...due to the slender body-long tail. I suppose that the hemipenes could be popped but I am not a fan of doing so...Especially to such delicate snakes. If you really want to bred I would suggest hedging your bets anyway and getting two pairs, as these are inexpensive and it increases your chance of success...Frank

If you are sure that you have an adult...its quit easy to see the difference. The female is simply two times as big as the male. It also has a little different head structure compared to the female. I placed a picture of my pair some time ago in previous threads. Hope they are usefull for you.

notice small head of male. The male is relatively thin and its very hard to really see where the tail begins. The female has a clear tail beginning.

I will post some better pics in the future.

thanx for the great pix though after looking at your prasina's i'm not sure anymore if mine's an adult or still adolescent hehe. Do you have more distinct pics with them seperately.everybody tells me male prasina's are smaller than the females but how small is small and how big is big?
