Scarlet King

greenbay1 Apr 23, 2008 05:10 PM

I just looked at oxyrhopus posting again of the Lake Scarlet King. It brought back memories of my childhood in Florida. How delicate are scarlet kings and is their husbandry difficult?

As a general rule, these pretty little snakes can be a real handfull when it comes to pampering them in their nervous quirky ways. That's the ONLY reason you don't see them offered on half the tables at a reptile show. The young are EXTREMELY small(1/8th of an inch diameter) and can try the patience of the most seasoned herper to get started feeding as hatchlings.

I've had many of these little guys, and I did real well with them, but take my advice, these little dudes should be left only to veterans with lots of snake experience. Scarlet Kings and many other small N.American Milks are a totally different thing altogether when compared to many other snakes in the hobby.

best regards, ~Doug

What kind is the snake in the water bowl with all the orange?

That's an "extreme hypo" tangerine Honduran Milksnake. They display a great reduction in dark pigment(melanin), reduced so much so that there is ZERO black tipping on the scales, much thinner, reduced bands(vanished in some areas), deep "ruby-red" eyes, and an overall intensified neon pumpkin orange coloration.

Here is a pic of a normal "tangerine" phase Honduran, still a nice looking animal, but note all the black tipping on the scales, and a somewhat "dirtier" look, and wider jet black rings.

Here's a fairly recent pic of the same "extreme hypo" in my above post. He's an '06 male that I hope will breed this year.

another fairly recent pic of him taken a couple months ago.
