Wild caught Garter

Waltorian Apr 23, 2008 10:01 PM

A friend of mind recently caught a medium sized garter snake, and just getting interested in reptiles wants to keep it. I gave a spare tank I had and set him up with the basics. I have a ball python and a bearded dragon. I have never cared for a garter snake. caught many took pictured turned loose and cared for none. Do they have a time period for destressing as I would call it before they will it? The snake appears to be female and quite chubby. I thought if he/she might have recently fed maybe thats why she is not eating. Any input would be great.. Thanks Waldo

Waldo,

De-stressing - Some snakes will eat from your hand 10 minutes after they are caught. Others may take some time.

If it is a female, and Gravid - Please instruct your friend to let her go. If she has a big litter and your friend is inexperienced (you said he is) The babies may prove to be more than your friend counted on.

Snap a photo and post it, several Garter Gurus could probably tell if she is a gravid female. (unlike many species, Garter females are of "Amazon woman" proportions compared to males.)

Personally, I prefer to capture babies or juvies - They are easier to get adjusted and most vulnerable from predation.

Kind regards,
