This snake was behind my office in Mobile, AL and at first I thought it was a racer, but then I noticed it had a pattern on it. If you look it closely, you will notice brown on black blotches. I also did not notice any white or lighter coloring on it's underside, although I did not try to flip it over. What is it?

BTW, it is free to roam around the grounds as we are a snake friendly company.

It's a juvenile black racer, that hasn't yet lost all of it's baby pattern. It's on its way to becoming all black, but just not quite there yet, at this stage of life.

I was just about to say the same thing. I've never seen one in that sub-adult phase. Neat!

Thanks, that was my first impression, but I've never seen one with a pattern. One day I caught 2 racers in our factory at the same time. We have plenty around here, that's for sure.

Yes, hatchlings and juvenile Racer's are boldly marked, which then gradually fade into the solid black adult coloration.

Young racers are commonly mistaken for ratsnakes by many folks.
