Gas Prices and the Affect on Expos

ballmorphsbymike Apr 24, 2008 02:00 PM

Just wanting to get some opinions on what you guys are noticing with gas prices at an alltime high and the attendance of expos both customers and vendors. Being in TN we dont have the luxury of having reptile expos close by (kentucky show 3hrs, birmingham 3 hrs). I do plan on attending the Daytona show with a friend, he is driving and we are splitting the gas and condo. With news reports of Gas being $5/gal. by the end of summer...we might easily spend $1200-$1600 in GAS alone....our condo for 5 nights total is $550 @ the Ocean Walk....spending 3X the $ on gas than hotel...THATS CRAZY!!!! I might not have any cash left for animals!!! Im sure it would be cheaper to fly, but we plan on buying a lot of supplies and animals.....guess I could ship everything back!!! OH WELL!!!!!! Just thought this would be a good conversation thread!

just my opinion but i would definately fly! it will probably save you both $1000 or so if you reserve your tickets far enough in advance. and if you're gonna be there for 5 days, send your purchases home or pack as much as you can in your luggage.

If gas was $14.00 a gallon it would not keep me from my once a year trip to the expo here is Sacramento. Premium hit $.19 a gallon here on Tuesday but regular is still floating around $3.89 per gallon. Dont get me wrong I for sure will feel the hit when its time to fill the car up to go to the expo but the way I see it I have all year to save for it LOL.

$5 a gallon, I wish it was that cheap here in the UK. It works out at about $10 a gallon already, 75% of that goes staight to the tax man.

Thats insane!!!!!! Time to get a bike!!!...or walk!

Yeah, gas in Europe tends to be much more expensive in general. One of the reasons that you will notice smaller cars and mopeds or scooters.

$1200-1600 in gas? What are you driving a tank?
Its what, 800-1000 miles from Tennessee to Daytona, my 5 year old Civic gets roughly...35 miles to the gallon highway driving... holds roughly 13 gallons of gas. Thus, I can drive 455 miles per tank, so it will take at most, two and a half tanks of gas to get to Daytona. So, if gas is $5 a gallon...each tank will cost $65, one way trip, no more than $195 which is the total for three full tanks of gas...return trip will be less than $400 and that is being generous and probably with a half tank of gas left. A far cry from $1200.

Unless you drive a quarter ton truck which gets 10 miles to the gallon...

we just went to arlington-- driving a dodge 1500 HYBRID-- worst thing I could have EVER GOTTEN!! spent nearly 500$ in gas--- on a 7 hour drive....

Also just bought a chrysler pacifica--- another gas guzzler....

our old truck is an 88 and gets better mileage than the 2 new vehicles.... thats what hubby takes to work now, and the new one just sits... total waste of a huge car payment when you can't afford the gas....

ugh!

It didn't keep us from doing the arlington trip-- but we have wanted to do daytona for a while-- especially after arlington... just not willing to pay for it...

stupid gas!! where's that frying grease at... ?

Isn't it funny how 15 years ago there were plenty of compact cars that were getting 40-50 miles per gallon and a few that actually got 60-70 mpg, and now "fuel efficient" is 30 miles per gallon? Our country is in major economic trouble and it's only going to get worse. Just lean into it.

Quite a few people in the UK are running their older diesel oil vehicles on vegitable, rapeseed, or corn oil. I run my van on it in the summer. It's gone up from 40p a liter around 80c, to £1 a liter around $2 in just over 9 months. It's now not that much cheaper than diesel that's £1.19 liter. So the idea of cheap fuel over here din't last long.

My daily driver is an 85 Bronco2 I never worked it out completely but out of a 23G tank I get about 120 miles on the whole tank if I drink like an old lady, If I drive like me I am filling up at about 90-100 miles thats 5.21 miles per gallon if I drive like an old lady. The car I just got my wife gets about 38MPG and my old 1981 Toyota witch is just a toy hot rod little car get better than the bronco and I have it up to about 150hp more than the bronco, I actually recently improved my millage and power with a tube header on the Toyota, If she wernt so purdy and chrome she would be my daily driver but since I get an inch of dirt and sawdust on my car every day at work the old ford will have to do for now. I miss my old 70MPG Suzuki

Gotta love, 80's toyota pickups. Resiliant little trucks. We have one, but its just a beater.

Reptile shows are extremely important to me; I wouldn't miss one for the sake of gas prices.

I drive a 1999 Kia Sportage (the advertisements that say their fuel efficient is a lie). Its the littlest 4-cylinder SUV in the world - not a tank or big truck. And I only get about 10-14 miles to the gallon!!

With gas prices going up, it may not stop me from going to reptile shows, but I'm not gonna lie and say its not gonna stop me from going everywhere. I'll be cutting down on the traveling if it ever really hits 5 dollars. Fortunately, I live in Jersey, I think we're the cheapest right now???

huge a$$ gas guzzlin' SUV...we need space to haul back supplies and snakes we plan on purchasing from you fine vendors out there!!!

tcabner Apr 27, 2008 04:10 PM

Ok, I just did a quick calculation after I read through all the replies and noticed that you drove an SUV....but still...

Say Daytona is 600 miles from your point in Tennessee, that's 1200 miles round trip. If you were driving a vehicle that averaged 10mpg, you would go through 120 gallons. 120 gallons x $5 a gallong for gas, that's $600 for the entire trip.
Even if Daytona is 800 miles from your location, that's 1600 miles round trip. At 10mpg, that's 160 gallons of fuel. 160 x $5 a gallon is still ONLY (lol) $800. Now granted you'll probably do a little more driving while you're down there, but come on now...that would still pale in comparison to your figures. If your SUV gets that bad gas mileage, go buy a Peterbilt tractor trailer, it'll at least be able to haul more for the same amount spent on gas, lol.
In other news, gas prices are expected to drop dramatically around the end of summer/early fall because several refineries are coming back online from repairs, refineries that aren't controlled by OPEC. Food for thought...

tcabner Apr 27, 2008 04:13 PM

Another thing, my girlfriend and I are going down to the Daytona Expo, and it will only cost us $460 a person for RT tickets from Louisville, KY to Daytona, along with 2 nights stay at the Daytona Hilton. We won't even have to worry about a cab or renting a car since there is a bus that goes from the airport to the hilton for $1 a person. The big issue of course, will be if we buy something, we'll have to ship it back. Samuel Jackson don't want no more m'fin snakes on them m'fin planes!

NorthernRegius Apr 28, 2008 10:22 PM

You'll get at least 7-14% more MPG:
www.FuelSaverTabs.com I use them & get an extra 5-7 MPG in my Ford. I'd rather fly to Daytona but I got stuff to pick up.
