looking @ buying a GTP... Any advice.

surfsup Apr 24, 2008 03:41 PM

Hi everyone,

Im very interested in GTP's and been looking at getting one to add to my collection.

I've raised a CB Columbian RTB since it was a baby and is now 8 years old, Beautiful and really healthy.

I've been reading a lot on GTP's and get the feeling they are a little more work that raising a RTB. But i feel i am ready to step up to that and make a commitment.

Any words of advice?

And also, i live in southern california(san diego) and its hard to find them around here. I will come across one at a time at the local pet stores where the GTP are around $500 which seems pretty reasonable. I also see them from breeders online ranging from 250 (but could you trust buying GTP's online etc?)

thank you. any info will help.

I would stear away from $250 chondros. They are most likely CH imports or WC. Get Greg Maxwell's book The More Complete Chondro. Or visit one of the other forums dedicated to just chondros. They are not hard work, nor do they require more work than boas. Don't quote me on this, but I think Cathy Maynard is in the San Diego area. If not, I know she is in Cali. Once you reach the chondro community, you'll recognize who NOT to buy from. Good luck.

Thanks a lot Brandon.

She was brought up in another forum but couldnt find a site or anything.
(and yes she is in SD (temecula)
Does she have a website that you know of by any chance?

There is a pet store (Pet Kingdom) that has a GTP that looks really healthy that i might invest in.

Again, thanks a lot for your info

Cathy is down in Riverside I think, but not that far from San Diego. Her website is: www.chondrosbycathy.com I believe. I haven't been on it in a while but you can probably hook up with her on the MVF forum.

Welcome to the wonderful world of green trees!! My site is undergoing a major reconstruction after not being able to access old one after changing server!

Thanks Brandon and Meg, yes, I'm fairly close to SD and make the trip down there often because it's my FAVORITE big city in the world!!

Anyways, if you'd like come to the May meeting at the San Diego Herp Society and I'll be doing a presentation there on gtps and will have a couple interesting ones to display too. There will be plenty of time to meet up and ask any questions. In the meantime, if you can... definitely pick up Greg's book. It will make you want a chondro even more.

Feel free to contact me anytime and check out the great people on the Morelia Viridis forum too!!

Actually, they are less work. The conditions you keep them is different, but they are less labor intensive than boas. They are more delicate as neonates than boas.

"Any words of advice?"

I'll just reiterate what has already been said. As a first time buyer, you need to be extra careful to purchase from a breeder who will stand behind his animal and provide support. The worst way to get your first chondro is from a pet shop, brokers, and shows. Not that there aren't some good buys out there from these sources, its just that it takes an experianced eye to find them and experiance to deal with the inevitable problems that often pop up when dealing with these types of animals. Lots of animals "look nice," for awhile. When they hatch they look nice. But if they haven't been trained to feed properly, they won't look nice for long.

The safest way to get a chondro is to frequent these forums and see who is producing them. Visit the MVF forum classifieds. Some of these people advertise on Kingsnake as well. But there are more brokers on kingsnake than breeders, so unless you know who is who, my opinion is that it is not safe to purchase from the Kingsnake forum.

" (but could you trust buying GTP's online etc?)"

Provided you find a reputable breeder, buying one online is about the safest way to buy one. Of coarse it would be nice to visit the breeder in person. But when a reputable breeder ships you an animal, the risk is all his. Most guarantee that the animal will arrive live, healthy and feeding. They keep their reputation by standing behind their word.

Be careful. You may want to think about the possibility of having to sacrifice a few things down the road…they are known to be addictive.
