Catch and Release

I'm conducting population research of E. garter snakes in my area, and I would like to somehow mark the snakes for identification if I find them again. What's the best way to do this (obviously) without harming the snake?

You could keep a sketchbook of the snake's underbellies from the cloaca to the end of the tail. You can also clip a small portion of a belly scale without harming the snake.

Those methods are a lot better than what I have been reading about temporarily marking the snake with paint. I think I'll use the sketching method since I'm more of an artist. Thank you!

I'll be honest: I didn't come up with either of those methods. I saw both of them on Animal Planet.

Hahaha!! Either way - it helped solve my problem!
