i found at a local pet store a pair of browns that some body traded in on a maltipoo. the pair looks healthy feels heavy and alert. they are 11 or 12 inches and the female is 12.5lbs how heavy does this species need to be to reproduce. any input would be appreciated.

That weight is good for that size.Females I've owned were around 25 LBS.It could be that there are some smaller rases of emys emys that could lay at a lower weight. I will call someone and find out ,for I am quite intrested myself. My best breeders are in the high 30s lb size.Do they look older than dirt? If their carapaces are very worn down and you cant make out growth rings very well, their old small ones.Eather way you would have a good jump on things as they do not mature very fast, and even when old or heavy enough they may take many years to adjust.Males should be very horny this time of year.Once when opening a box that some imported emys were in all the way from Asia, the male was intent on doing the nasty as they took their first steps into their new world. The male only weighted 12 LBS,seemingly light and beat-up.I would have passes him up if it wasnt for seeing that mounting. He thrived and now can knock up four femals per season, years on end.Look at their eyes if their not sunkin in,They might be some long term captives, which is the best deal going if you can find them.Gooooood luck, let me know how it goes.Vic
