got my new ball!

Patrick562 Apr 24, 2008 10:11 PM

She's almost one years of age, and she's very tame. There were two girls left at the place and she was the prettiest, she also ate right away while the other one did not. I'll be feeding her stunned fuzzies once a week. I'll have some better pictures soon. Also, I have not chosen a name for her yet. I'll be sure to keep you updated.

why would you feed her stunned fuzzies? why not just give them to her? stunning can be very cruel to the mice if u dont do it correctly, and if she is only eating fuzzies she will be abel to eat it just fine without getting hurt

Keep in mind the word "fuzzy" varies from store to store. It might also be referred to as "medium" in some places. She's been eating mice with visible white fur. And I won't be stunning them myself, I'll be taking her to the same store to be fed. So they can stun the mice properly, and see how well she is doing over time.

Is it me, or does this seem very strange??? Why in the heck would you take her back to the store to be fed??????????

haha ya i was thinking the same things you all were! a stunned fuzzy for a year old snake is just an appetizer, my girl is only like 6 months and she will pound regular mice...... hopefully he means fuzzy rats not mice, thats the same size rats i will feed if they have them in stock.

congrats on the new ball. If she's almost a year old I would be moving her up on the food item size. And taking it to the store to feed it is going to get old quick. Plus just wondering why would you do that ? Good luck w/ your new snake.

yeah that is gonna get real old real fast. as long as you supervise her with her food she should be fine, just dont leave the mice in the alone with her for any period of time. but she should be able to feed by herself no problem

1st all you will do is stress the pore thing out waging it back and forth to the pet store , if you cant handle doing what it takes weather stunning them or outright killing them to protect your snake then maybe you should rethink the hole snake keeping thing ,and you shouldn’t have to stun fuzzes anyway. and it shouldn’t be eating fuzzes it needs something bigger . Hatchlings eat fuzzes not yearlings . Just my 2 cents . David

I'm taking her to the store to be fed so I don't have to stun the mice myself. And it just happens to be down the street, so why not? I see nothing wrong with her future. What's with all the pessimism?

If that's the way you want to do it, then by all means, go ahead, but keep in mind, it may just stress the snake out more than it's worth, taking her on a short road trip every other week.

These people in this forum are great for information, they have helped me out numerous times with issues I have had with my first BP... so, do listen to them and what they're saying. A lot of them have been breeding or have had BP's for a very long time and have probably been there and seen that.

Good luck doing that... if it doesn't end up working out... keep in mind the mice can't do too much damage if you are standing right there supervising. I just fed my snake 2 mice yesterday. My snake didn't get it by the head when he struck, but by the ass and the mouse tried to bite him, but luckily i was right there and was able to stick my tongs in between the mouse and my snakes scales....... As long as you're right there watching, (and when I say watching I mean sitting there with a "weapon" making sure the mouse/rat doesn't pose any danger) everything should be fine...

Also, if you're really worried about the rodent causing damage... why don't you get the snake of F/T mice or rats.... much safer, and less stress for the snake...

Just food for thought...

Congrats on the new kid.
I think one thing I would be concerned with is all the moving and transporting around just to get her fed.
The last thing you want to do is handle them or move them around too much right afer eating so they don't regurgitate as this can upset thier digestive tract and be the start of some big issues.
This is a great site to read and ask questions I'm sorry if you felt slammed.
Your snakes size is capable of much larger prey.
I think that was the point that was being made, what did they have her on before? Has she been given frozen/thawed?
I don't agree with the stunning being cruel any more so than being frozen or eaten alive. ( the frozen part I know about I lived in Michigan most of my life and fell through the ice once, friggin hurt like you wouldn't believe!!)
The fact is we have chosen to keep an animal that eats other animals.
When you love your animals you suddenly are willing to try some things you wouldn't have imagined such as putting a mouse in a plastic bag and whacking it against a hard surface. One good whack and it's done. It's not brain surgery... although you may find yourself one day exposing the brain of a rodent to get your snake to eat.
Take care and ask questions,

what i meant to say was that stunning can be cruel if it is not done correctly. and i have one snake that eats live ad wont touch F/T and one that wont touch live so i have to do both. thats all i was saying boutt he stunning though
