Bummer of a day.....

Jeremy Pierce Apr 25, 2008 04:33 PM

Well, as of last fall I live in the country. I was pumped to finally have a nice day today to get out and mow. I am intentionally leaving sections of my land wild so as to observe wild life. I get on the lawn tractor and take off cruising and enjoying the spring air. I round a corner look down, see a snake and under the mower it goes! AHHHHHHHHH!!!! It was about a three foot red sided garter. Ruined my day outside for sure. I didn't have any time to react. As bad as it was that I ended this pretty things life, I don't know what I would have done had it been a bull! As it was I was beating on my mower with disgust! Needless to say in the future, I will be watching in front of me intently. Take care all!

Thats a bummer. why do garters always hang out in the grass? I'd like to think Pits are smart enough to get out of the way.

Sorry to hear it. I feel your pain. I have never done that but I have seen a few snakes get ruined by mowers in my day. As long as we are doing the true confessions thing I will one up you. I once topped the crest of a hill on an old gravel road and drove over an absolutely beautiful eastern yellow bellied racer. That was close to 30 years ago but I still feel bad about it.....

One more.....

At about age 10, I stashed a gallon jar filled with 4-5 baby red-sided garters in the shade of an old shed at my Grandmother's house to eat lunch only to find upon my return that the shade had shifted and the garters were all dead from hyper-thermia.....what a waste of life. My hell will probably involve some repeating, never ending loop of snakes dying in the sun scenario or me in a giant glass jar cooking in the sun. Karma will collect one way or another......

Oh man!! That really sucks! You can't blame yourself too much if didn't have any time to react.
