Elongated Tortoise Info?

Nicodemus Apr 26, 2008 08:03 AM

A fellow offered me an elongated for $100. I'm kind of curious how different they are from russians (the only species I keep)...

Any good sites out there?

I don't have experience of these, but here are some articles:

Imported Elongateds are extremely difficult to acclimate and clean up. It's gotta make you wonder why you can get an imported adult for $100.

If you can acclimate them they have the same basic care as the Redfoot tortoise. They also have very similar personalities as the RF.

Trying to keep the fun in Chelonian care

Pretty different,
coming from the SE Asian climate vs. the Northerly and cool Winter climates of horsefieldi. You might want to examine the climate where you live and assess if you should try elongateds or not. Like so many SE Asian imports, they may come with parasitic surprises etc. I occasionally see captive hatched for sale, you might want to consider them or LTC, fresh imorts are risky... Also, you wouldn't want to mix these two species.vic

Well first of all, I never said I was going to mix.

I was just using my russians as an example...i.e. are elongateds harder to keep than russians? REAL different care from russians? etc etc...apparently they are very different.

Now, the fellow has had him for a while...not sure how long, but it sounds like there are no Elongated breeders out there, and if there were, the tortoises would be much more expensive than $100, especially as hatchlings, correct?
