It's snowing; no wonder few snakes...

ReneeValois Apr 26, 2008 09:57 AM

live in Minnesota. I bet even the garter snakes have slid back into their hibernation burrows. The grass under the snow is green, however.

I'd like to know what kind of snakes people find in their home states. What have people seen or caught in which states? (Living vicariously, I guess...). Sorry it's a bit off-topic, since I bet noone's caught a wild BRB!

in MASS there are mostly eastern garter snakes, northern water snakes, ribbon snakes... then not as common where brown snakes, and ringneck snakes. there are more i think 10 all together but those are (from my experience) most common.

since moving to New Mexico all i have seen so far are bull snakes, but this summer a guy from work is going to take me field herping and i expect to see bulls, hognose, kings... even rattle snakes... i will take pictures for sure!!

2 or 3? maybe a breeding pair?
-- bearded dragon for the wifey my list got to big...

Sorry for the slow response, I was out all day enjoying the North Carolina sunshine... (sorry, I couldn't resist.)

Good topic, actually. I found a worm snake a couple weeks ago and posted a picture of it. I've seen black racers, garters, a couple species of water snakes, rough green snakes, and copperheads around here. (I really want to find another copperhead and get some pics of it, they are neat looking snakes.)

Any progress on the boa constrictor?

Thanks,
Ed

Renee,
...I was fortunate to have grown up in east central Florida in the 1960s. There are 31 different native snakes there and I have caught 30 of them. I now live just south of the famous Okeetee snake hunting area of South Carolina and I occasionally road hunt at night there. I have also hunted snakes in many other countries and all over the southern half of the US. For the first few years that I was into snakes I hunted almost daily and caught a bunch of them. There were several times that my brother and I caught over 30 snakes in a single day. I have not kept a life list of snake species I have caught but I imagine it would be approaching 75 now. I have not caught a Brazilian Rainbow Boa but I have caught Colombian Rainbow Boas and Boa Constrictors in Panama. My most recent catch was a Ringneck snake the week before last in the Smoky Mountains. I have seen two Garter Snakes in the last week along the fence behind my house. My most common catch here in the neighborhood the last few years are Garters and Copperheads.
Jeff

I had great luck in GA over the few years I was there. Lots of brown snakes, a couple of worm snakes, some garters and a really nice young copperhead along with a few fall salamanders. Before that I was in FL, the snakes were literally everywhere. I caught a few really nice ringneck snakes, a whole lot of water snakes and a water moccasin. I also got to see my first redbelly turtle while I was there. I have no idea how his giant self got into the dog kennel, but they were going ape over him. Rocks just arent supposed to move! lol. There were tons of green tree frogs every night, you couldnt even talk on the phone they were so loud. I did not hunt in CA, but did find a few snakes in the yard here and there. I wish I had hunted, the ringnecks there are amazing. I grew up in Mi and was constantly bringing home anything I could get my hands on, primarily garters of all sizes. Now I'm in NC and have seen a few of the locals, but havent really gone out and flipped boards yet. I was hoping to find something interesting in a wood pile I had to move, but it was apparently empty. I did strip some bark, but nothing showed up. I'm sure there's tons to be found, I'll report back with items of interest, in particular anything red striped that I'm on the lookout for.

Here in CA I have caught pacific gopher snakes, cal king snakes, garter snakes(not sure on variety), sharp tail snakes, rubber boa's, rosy boa's, and rattlesnakes. On the rattlesnakes I am not sure about the variety but without looking range maps up I would guess pacific or western diamondback.

Sean.

I have found frogs snakes and turtles in the dead of winter in NJ with snow and Ice Involved. Garter snakes and Painted turtles are quite active for animals everyone thinks go into deep burrows all winter. Especaliy Painted Turtles. No ice some are out to be found.
