How do you spell "relief"?!

golfdiva Apr 26, 2008 12:31 PM

I spell it: f*o*u*n*d the turtle!! YEAH!!

This a.m. DH and I dug under the retaining wall far enough for me to crawl under there. I was in so far just my feet were sticking out! I could shine a flashlight down both tunnels and see quite a way. I didn't see her, and it sure looked like she hadn't been there! But they were curvy tunnels. And would you believe, shortly after she disappeared we had an earthquake?? Yea, in Michigan! So I started thinking like maybe some tunnels collapsed or something. DH is talking about digging up the whole yard...etc..etc. Plus, the weather has turned cold, in the 40's, with a possibility of snow tonight!!

Also I look around at the piles of sand we made from digging out the tunnel and think "What if she buried herself somewhere else and now I've trapped her! Soooo, we start digging out the whole area!

DH kept saying, "Sure are a lot of stones here. Here's another one" and tossing it out of the pen.

Then he says, "Here's another one...wait..that's not a rock! That's a turtle!"

She was next to the house's foundation, a foot or more buried! I took her inside, gave her a warm soak. She is alert and looking around. She soaked for about 20 mins. then took off to the the other side of her pen where the heat lamp and her favorite hiding place is!

She seems no worse for wear, at least not nearly as frazzled as I am!!

Thank you all so much for your help and encouragement!! (The camera from the ornithologist is a great idea! In fact my neice is researching house wrens at Michigian State!) I'm just so glad and relieved we finally found her! Would you believe she had been missing about a month!!

That's great news. Glad to hear it.

Congratulations! That story is one for the books, that's for sure.

Yeah, and the buried in a tunnel with just your feet hanging out...uh, my worst nightmare, yikes! Small spaces, big scary.

Actually, it was kinda cool being under the ground and looking down the tunnel!

She must have been in the tunnel at some point because when she was first missing, I saw her tracks go right into the tunnel. But she must of come right back out and buried herself else where.

Oh YAY!!!

That's great news!

Yesterday, I woke up fully prepared to 'toss' the hibernacula here in search of the one turtle that hadn't emerged yet. Thankfully, she was poking her head out as a rolled a log out of the way to start looking for her.

This seems to happen every year: one or two decide to 'sleep in' and make me stress out wondering if they're ok.

So, all are present and accounted for, and all appear to be quite healthy.

Happy Spring everyone!

I'm sooooooooooooo happy for you!
Whew!

At least you weren't down the hole when hte earthquake hit!

golfdiva Apr 28, 2008 06:49 PM

LOL! Now that would have been an unique experience!

The quake was actually about 5:30 a.m. so I never felt it.

Glad the saga has a happy ending! So she never was in the tunnel? Just like our turtles to make us worry!

I buried 16 inches of aluminum siding all along the walls of my pens-that is a lot of linear feet of the expensive stuff, but I did it because I didn't want to lose any via a tunnel. I have seen how deep they can bury themselves. Natually they do know how to undig themselves, too Tess
