Hog Island Temperment

skyfire_1 Apr 26, 2008 03:14 PM

I know you can't label a certain type of Boa 100% as being aggressive or docile, because your always going to have different personalities in each snake. But on the most part how do the Hog Islands seem. I was thinking of getting a Hog, but the two I know personnaly are both extremely snippy, and are always striking. They weren't bad when they were young, but now at four years old they are completely different.

Does anyone have a certain type of BCI in mind that they think is generally on the calm side. That's what was driving me towards a Hog, but not too sure right now.

Are pretty darn awesome. I picked up an adult female (light colored normal appearing) and right off the bat she was easy to handle and nice-tempered. I also have two two-year-olds, a high orange male and a extremely orange and pink female, and both of them are easy to handle and none of these hogs have ever bitten me. HOWEVER, they have an EXCELLENT feeding response. My female will practically come out of the tub to snatch what may be a meal, once in my hands though, she is docile. There have been instances where she was a bit nervous, but nothing happened from it. My adult female twice took a striking stance awhile back when I had entered her cage for a water change or a paper removal and basically let me know she wasn't thrilled with the invasion, but I think she was ovulating or had just ovulated, so that may have something to do with it.
I love my hogs, I have had the two younger ones almost a year now, no real change in behavior. I think that less handling and room/habitat changes can have an effect on behavior though... just a thought... depends on the owner and situation much of the time, although you do get some bad-apples ;p (meaning cranky and anti-social).

I have eight adults. Five are fine. One is not predictable. Two are always uncomfortable and never calm down while being held. I have found that the babies are worse than the adults (usually). The pictured one is evil.

I had hogs for years and they were all very calm and docile.

My female had 3 litters, she would come right out of the cage
right after giving birth calm as a dove.

The 3 litters of neonates were born calm, no striking or
hissing, until after they were seperated and caged. There
were always one or two that would hiss a little, but very
little, and they calmed down pretty quickly...

It depends on their genetics and how they are cared for. Before
I got my silverbacks all of the posts I'd read about amarali
were about how vicious they were. Mine are both complete
sweethearts.
