feeding live rats

Got a phone call at work, roommate left town, left snake, do you take them, bla bla bla. Told him bring it to me. This poor snake was brought to me in a bag, alive, the owner/roommate didn't even wait for me to check out snake, drop and run job. Had to take to vet and had put down. Look at photo if you have a strong stomach. DO NOT LEAVE LIVE FOOD ITEMS UNATTENTED IN WITH YOUR SNAKES. Told people for 20 plus years frozen, pre killed, live must be watched and removed when not ate. Sorry if I offended anyone but I care more for the snake then the dumb a** that did this....

That's EXACTLY why I've been telling people the very same thing for decades!

As a kid in the early 70's, I always had snakes, and a 5 foot Indigo that I had experienced the same torture from a large mouse that was left in the cage that the snake wasn't interested in eating. It's tail was nibbled down to the vertebrae from the tip of it's tail, all the way up to the cloaca(didn't know any better back then.)

Looking at that poor Boa brings back some awful memories. I don't think I could have even waited long enough to get the Boa to the vet,.....I think I would of relieved it of it's pain right then and there with a brick, or something similar.

Did the guy that dropped it off and hauled-ass think you were going to be able to help that poor Boa out in the least?....man! what a complete idiot!!!! I'm glad you had the sense to do what was best for the snake......wow!, what a complete horror story.

Anyway, I think this will open up some peoples eyes as to what can happen with a live rodent that's left unattended for any length of time.

best regards, ~Doug

that is truly a shame.. i have a rescue ball python that the previous owner who didn't know any better left a rat in with her..well the rat proceeded to eat the tip of her tail and bit her all along her back with the scarring to prove it..odd thing is she'll still take live..matter of fact she'll only take live so i do monitor the kill until the prey is swallowed..it's a shame that there are people out there that dont know the dangers of leaving live prey unattended in the enclosure with their snake(s)

That tugged at my heart.. So sad.

What really sucks, if that was a dog or cat someone would be facing criminal charges.

If I knew the person that allowed this to happen, I would be the one facing criminal charges.

Wayne
