First Wild California King...in Arizona

RG Apr 27, 2008 11:04 AM

I wanted to share an exciting California King find, a few weeks ago, in Phoenix Arizona.

I've been looking for Cal. Kings in Arizona every time I went to visit my Dad...and I've been unsuccessful until now!

My girlfriend spotted this guy crawling into a cactus. I waited 20 minutes, while he searched for food, until he finally emerged from the cactus so I could pick him up.

First Spot:

Looking for food:

I removed about 15 or so cactus thorns from him...and he seemed grateful... he never even tried to strike.

A happy capture:

I got a few post capture shots, and I was amazed when he opened his mouth!

Headed back to find some food:

Maybe a spiny or earless lizard or ground squirrel:

A parting scenic shot:

BRAVO!!!!!, way to go Rusty!,....that is SOME string of shots!

Nature at it's very best dude!,......I'm guessing he might have possibly downed a lizard real quick while you were waiting for him to emerge from the cactus??.....I just LOVE that kind of stuff, and I'm happy you got all those successive shots of the event too.

Cool stuff!

I love this guy... he looks SO much like a colorful bearded dragon. ^_^ I miss being out in the desert. We used to find all sorts of awesome herps in New Mexico.

Those are some beautiful shots. That Cal king was beautiful and seemed as interested in you as you were in him!

We also saw two coachwhips (one red, one almost completely black) and a western ring-neck snake...among many other types of lizards.

I'll be posting the coachwhip shots in the "Racers & Coachwhips" forum sometime in the near future.
